The most common surgical technique for Microtia in the world is the “Natural Cartilage Technique”, because there is no substitution for our own living tissues. When performed well, the results are excellent and life-long.
There are three chances for a good result when using the above algorithm. The cartilage technique requires elastic, virgin skin for it’s ideal result. If there is much scar from a previous surgery, either from failed medpor or cartilage, then the cartilage technique is not the best option.
There are only two chances for a good result if the child undergoes either a medpor or a prosthetic as a first choice because of the scarring that will occur if these techniques fail.
